Mumbai, February 21: Over 30 Physical Education teachers and badminton coaches from various schools and badminton academies from the city participated in the three-day Shuttle Time India programme, orgainsed by the Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA) in collaboration with Badminton Association of India (BAI) at the NSCI Club, Worli on Tuesday. The Shuttle Time programme is an initiative which would help local amateur coaches, school trainers and Physical Education (PE) teachers to improve their coaching skills and get certified from the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
Ian Gil of Philippines, Trainer from Badminton World Federation, is conducting the programme and was updating the teachers and coaches with all the latest basic coaching methods for beginners. He was seen teaching the simple warm-up routines, and other training drills and emphasized on fun programs which would make the kids enjoy the sessions.
Catching up with media persons at the break, Gil said “Shuttle Time is a badminton school programme specially designed for teachers where we aim that the teachers can plan and delivery fun and safe badminton lessons to the children,”
Despite his short interaction with the local teachers and coaches he believes that they do plenty to help the children. “I see a lot of potential in the teachers that they can really deliver this programme directly to the children which will truly help the badminton clubs here in India as well as get players for future badminton games,” he stated.
BAI President, Dr Akhilesh Das Gupta, was of the opinion that this would help the sports grow in the country. "Shuttle Time India is a Badminton World Federation's school badminton program and organised by Badminton Association of India in India. The program aims to help existing school teachers and coaches develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to plan and deliver safe and fun badminton lessons to children. It will give every child a chance to play badminton,” he said.
Meanwhile, Supriya Devgun, Shuttle Time - Maharashtra State Coordinator, said: “This is a brilliant initiative, because sports has always been an exclusion model of a pyramid and we actually need to grow the base. By this programme, we are popularizing the sports by training teachers who are not equipped. We are trying to train people with different ways and means of making the sport more interesting. This is an interest generate medium and  the prog is devised in such a fun way which is a fun activity that there will be an interest at the school- level from which obviously more kids will get interested in the sport of badminton.”
“I respect the efforts of BAI President, Dr. Das Gupta. He has been a visionary for Indian badminton and I also thank BWF as they are doing their bit to popularize the sport,” Devgun further said.
Aparna Popat, a nine-time National women’s singles champion, said: “We have long been talking about how we need to tap into the grassroots and just get into individual schools. Without a concrete programme like this, it would have become very difficult. The BWF has done a great job to put such a programme together and then spreading the awareness and travelling all over the world to find a way to get kids interested in the sport in a correct way.”
