Residente Hits #1 With His Official Debut Single "Desencuentro"

The Puerto Rican singer-songwriter René Pérez Joglar, known around the world as Residente, has hit #1 on the Spotify Global chart with his first solo single "Desencuentro" (Mismatch), released on March 31^st.

Sung in Spanish and French, "Desencuentro" is a collaboration with the French singer and actress SoKo (Stéphanie Sokolinski). Meanwhile, his self-titled album, also released on March 31^st, has hit #1 on the Latin albums digital sales
chart.

Residente explains that this song describes two people who are a perfect fit but never get together. "It could be your soulmate, but you’re in different orbits," he says. "Even if you’ve met, you live in a mismatch. It can happen between people we know, between countries, and during moments in general. Mismatches can exist in so many places."

Turning to the songwriting process of "Desencuentro," the former vocalist of the legendary Calle 13 notes that it developed from a framework in which art is at the center. "Art is what should prevail. That’s why the concept has to go beyond the notes and their harmonies. It includes, of course, the lyrics, the accents, the voices, the nuances and the sonic effects. It encompasses the way one defines all the elements and the place that each one occupies. The concept helps the idea take shape, it defines a style and establishes an atmosphere. "Desencuentro" starts out with soft notes from a piano which then creates spaces for violins, violas, cellos, harps, piccolo, guitars and French horn. The percussion’s rhythm emulates the human pulse before driving into a magical crescendo that gives way to the scratches of DJ Craze.
