Who doesn’t about the success story of TV czarina Ekta Kapoor on television and big screen?! So when Ekta was invited to deliver a talk on the subject of ‘Power to Women’ on the most innovative show of the year – TED Talks India Nayi Soch - on Star Plus, she brought an untold story along!
But it wasn’t a bed of roses even for the daughter of Superstar Jitendra in those days of less competition. Ekta starts her story, “I was 80 kilos and from my dad I had got one thing- my Punjabi genes. I could not believe that without eating butter chicken one could get sleep. People have a sweet tooth. I had a complete sweet denture.” She had ideas but, “Life was good but I had no plan B. I had no option. Sometimes your greatest curse turns out to be your best blessing. I decided I was starting a TV serial business. My dad invested in me. Now comes the twist in the plot. Your biggest twist happens when you are at ground zero. The lowest point in your life. When you fall lower from a low. For me it was when lots of my pilots got rejected. Honestly, no channel wanted to meet me. How many chances will we give Jeetendra’s daughter? Some media professionals saw those pilots with my father and one of them asked “Are you putting your money into your daughter’s hobby?”
But father dearest did not give up on his talented daughter. She adds, “Only actors understand that in every actor’s life there is something called a façade. Even if he is broke, if due to bad investments or family disputes he has little money, he still has to have a fancy car. For my brother’s education abroad, my mother had to pawn her jewellery and my father invested all his money through me.”
A peer once audaciously told Jeetendra, “One person went to the extent of telling him “You should have bought her gold instead.” Added Ekta, “My father replied that, ‘gold should be within her, what will she do with gold outside?’ A gold medalist has gold within not outside.”
And this gave us all a new world of television entertainment with Ekta Kapoor.
In SRK’s words about Ekta to viewers, “The lady who stands for power of women is here!”
