Lipstick Under My Burkha is the "lady -oriented" film of the year. And after its hugely successful theatrical run in India it is making its way to the USA, where it will be releasing in major cities across the country.
After much controversy, with the CBFC trying to ban the film, and a long battle for its release, it seems this little gem of a film has a life of its own. It has travelled to over 40 film festivals and won 13 international awards. It has been loved by both audiences and critics, and been a super-hit at the box office, and is campaigning for the Golden Globes.
Women of South Asian origin living in different parts of th globe have been supporting and following the film for months. And now the excitement of those living in the US is palpable as the US release date of September 8 draws near.
Alankrita Shrivastava, the director of the film, who is in the US planning the release says, "I had no idea that Indian women living in the US had been championing the film with such gusto. I have been meeting lots of South Asian women here in LA and San Francisco and there is so much excitement about the US theatrical release. Everyone is making plans to go with their girl gangs. I am so moved by their support and enthusiasm."
Prakash Jha, the producer of the film, "We are really happy to release this film across major cities in the USA on Set 8. Lipstick Under My Burkha is a universal film that cuts across cultures and nations. I trust the American audience will enjoy watching a film that is from India and that has been so well appreciated by international audiences. The Indian and South Asian audiences in the US are also hugely excited about the release of this film in their country.”
Konkona Sensharma, "I was so happy to hear the news! I have friends in the US who have been really wanting to watch the film, and now they finally can! I feel the diaspora audiences especially South Asian women will really connect with the film, and I'm glad they have the opportunity to watch it now."
Ratna Pathak Shah "It has been most interesting to see how Lipstick has resonated with audiences all over the world from Japan to the USA. It does seem that women face the same challenges everywhere - far beyond India or 'developing societies'. I am now keen to see how US audiences, particularly the South Asian community, will react to the film. I especially want to hear what South Asian men say about it!! Because being uncomfortable is often inevitable before you can accept change!!!"
