Obituary : Dr. Hari Charan Verma, Former Deputy Director General (P), AIR and renowned Vocalist passed away



Dr. Hari Charan Verma, Former Deputy Director General, All India Radio and renowned Vocalist passed away last night at Faridabad. His last rights will be performed at 3.00 p.m. today in Faridabad.

Dr Hari Charan Verma was a distinguished vocalist (Hindustani Classical), Musicologist and Eminent Broadcaster. He retired from All India Radio as Dy. Director General Music and Administration. He belonged to Gwalior and Jaipur Gharana. He learnt classical music under the tutelage of his father Rajguru Pandit Devi Lal Ji of Jaipur Gharana, and Raja Bhaiya Poochhwaale of Gwalior Gharana.

He had been honored as Outstanding Artist of Hindustani Vocal Music by Indian Council for Cultural Relations and as Senior "A" Grade artist by All India Radio & TV. He had been honored with many National and International awards such as Sangeet Sarang, Sangeet Chudamani, Sangeet Gandharva, Vrishabh Deo Sangeet Samaysar Puraskar and International - Sangeet Martand at Georgetown, Guyana etc.

Dr Verma performed at many prestigious concerts in India and abroad. National Programs - AIR & TV, Akashwani Sangeet Sammelan, Tansen Samaroh, Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh, Apna Utsav (Govt. of India), Saptak - Ahmedabad, Hari Ballabh Sangeet Samaroh, Bhubaneswar Music Circle, Bhaskar Rao Sangeet Sammelan, Prayag Sangeet Samiti to name a few. He has also performed in International concerts at Georgetown, Trinidad & Tobacco, US & Tempa, University of Florida, New York and Nepal to name a few. He has directed a number of Operahs, Musical Features for Radio and number of serials for TV. Recently he has also directed music for a Bollywood Film, The Light - Swami Vivekanand.
