27th March 2017 Mumbai - “It i s high time for every school a nd university in the new India to introduce the subject of p oetry as part of their curricu lum or form poets clubs/ society or hubs for the studen ts to develop a sense of excellence in life skills”, said filmmaker Subhash Ghai wh ile moderating the workshop on art and technique of poetry with the legendary poet and lyricist, Gulzar saab at the Mumbai campus of Whistling Woods International (WWI).
Gulzar saab appreciated the do cumentary made by the students on the evolution of poetry in the world and Indian cinema. He also shared experiences from his early life – from whe n he used to participate in An takshari with his friends and create his own lines in shayar i, adding a flavor to the art to his initial working days when he used to work in a motor garage, mixing paints. It was destiny that introduced him to filmmaker Bimal Roy through a friend and finally he wrote his first song, ‘Moraa Goraa Ang Lai Le, Mohe Shaam Rang Dai De’ for the film Bandini, whic h brought a new flavor into the world of lyric writing of Hindi cinema.
The insightful evening commenc ed with six students reciting the poems written by them to p ay tribute to Gulzar saab - th e legend. The auditorium reson ated with thunderous applause as Gulzar saab blessed them and appreciated their approach to write original poems.
The highlight of the 5th VEDA cultural hub of WWI was when G ulzar saab inaugurated the stu dent’s poetic society, ‘KACHCH I QALAM’ initiated by Subhash Ghai and the students of the i nstitute. Gulzar saab drew th e inaugural curtains off the launching page of the poetic society and wrote an original line to mark the start of the beautiful initiative – ‘Dil Agar Hain Toh Dard Bhi Hoga, Iska Koi Nahi Hai Hul Shayad’. The 400 students present in the auditorium gave a standing ovation for his gracious gesture of inaugurati ng the poetic society at the WWI campus.
Complimenting Gulzar saab, Sub hash Ghai, Founder & Chairman, WWI said, “You have left a fr agrance of good poetry with us today in this campus which wi ll keep inspiring our students with so much talent of creati ve writing.”
The highly energetic interactive session with Subhash Ghai and Gulzar s aab revealed the difference be tween ‘poetry’ and ‘lyrics wri ting’. “As a poet I make my ow n statement but while writing lyrics I am commissioned to wr ite for a film’s story or situ ation”, shared the legendary poet.”
The Academy award winner for t he song ‘Jai Ho’ from Slumdog Millionaire and Padma Bhushan, Gulzar saab confessed his inc lination towards Bengali liter ature, which later inspired him to write many memorable songs for several Bengali filmmakers and he eventually also got married to a Bengali actress, Raakhee.
He also advised the students t o explore the numerous realiti es of life in order to get bet ter at their art, in addition to exploring various genres of writing, especially poems. The poetic evening came to a c lose with his beautiful lines as an advice to the students – ‘Ye likhne ki vidya hain, likhne se aati hain, likhte rahiye; Ye karne ki vidya hai, karne se aati hain, karte rahiye.”
Speaking about WWI, Gulzar saa b said, “I feel extremely hono ured and happy to be back here after three years. The moment I entered the campus, I felt like taking admission and gett ing back to studying. The stud ents here are lucky to have gotten the opportunity to study at an institute of such high prestige, and I wish them all the very best for their future endeavors. I woul d advise the students to explo re and write about the various nuances of life.”
