Express Cargo Clearance System honoured at Digital India Excellence Award

ECCS, jointly developed by Indian Customs and Express Industry Council of India (EICI)
100% paperless custom clearance facilitates ease of doing business in India and introduces transparency in Customs clearance
A Go Green initiative that would eliminate approx. 1.34 crore annual paper consumption
Mumbai, 19 December 2017: Express Cargo Clearance System (ECCS) was awarded the PAN-IIM World Management Award in the category Citizen Services (Corporate), under the Digital India Excellence Awards 2017. The award was presented at the “PAN-IIM World Management Awards” organised by 5th PAN-IIM World Management Conference. The Conference is an annual event initiated by all 20 Indian Institutes of Management and supported by Ministry of HRD, Ministry of Electronics & IT and Niti Aayog.
The ECCS has been jointly developed by Indian Customs and Express Industry Council of India (EICI). Commenting on the awards, Vijay Kumar, COO, EICI, said: “The award is a testimony to the commitment of Indian Customs towards bringing in transparency, speed, and efficiency in the custom clearance practice. There is no doubt that the ECCS would greatly facilitate electronic clearance of courier shipments and bring in transparency and ease of clearance, in line with the Government’s initiatives such as Digital India and Ease of Doing Business. The system is totally paperless and supplements the Governments commitment on reducing carbon footprint”.
This state-of-the-art ECCS application has been developed by Wipro and has been built on cutting edge technology products to ensure faster clearance, better compliance of rules, quick data reporting and enhanced data security.
The objective of ECCS is to ensure trade facilitation, compliance and improvement in governance. It will help reduce some of the major hurdles faced by Indian exporters and importers especially in the MSME sector.
ECCS links shipment data and its physical movement at the clearance ports via handheld barcode scanners, which enable transparent real time shipment tracking through the entire customs clearance cycle. Not only that, ECCS eliminates the use of all physical paper in the customs clearance process – it is estimated that approximately 1.34 crore annual paper consumption would be eliminated due to the implementation of the project.
ECCS will enhance compliance as also improve trade facilitation. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are set to gain the most from the ECCS. As some trade barriers ease, further growth in the manufacturing as well as e-commerce sector can be expected, aiming at facilitating exports as well as facilitating the Make in India initiative.
