As per Malayalam calendar, Karkiddom is the last month of the year and often known as the dark month of a year. It starts with July 17th according to Gregorian calendar and ends with August 16th. This month is known for its sufferings as heavy rainfall during this month brings illness and other contagious disease. For a common people, who are depended on agriculture to earn a living, have to suffer due to nature's fury as heavy floods and soil erosion take away their crops. It becomes difficult to venture out for any work during this month.
One of the important aspects of this month is going for Ayurvedic treatment. A special preparation known as 'Karkidaka Kanji' is prepared using different types of grains and medicinal leaves. On the Amavasi day of Karkidakam, people pay homage to their ancestors by performing vavu bali at temples or holy rivers.
To overcome their difficulties, people read "Adhyathma Ramayana" throughout this month. The Ramayana is recited at homes and temples which is considered auspicious. Hence, this month is also known as "Ramayana Maasam" or "Ramayana" Month.
Akashvani Thiruvananthapuram has also geared up for this occasion and has started broadcasting of recital of "Adhyamtha Ramayana" recited by eminent artists viz. Dr. K. Omanankutty, Shri. Kavalam Sree Kumar, Shri. Srivalson J. Menon, Dr. B. Arundhati and Shri. Navaeen. This recital of Ramayana can be heard daily from 06:15 am to 06:30 am at `1161 KHz from AIR, Thiruvananthapuram, 576 KHz, AIR, Alappuzha and all Kerala Network and also through internet and AIR Mobile App,. A repeat broadcast is given from 05:30 pm to 05:45 pm same day.
