Twitter announces #SheLeadsIndia this International Women's Day

~ A special International Women’s Day BlueRoom Q&A and emoji mark the celebration of women this month ~
India, 7th March 2017Twitter is “What’s Happening” across the globe. In 2016, powerful voices and movements come together to speak up for women’s rights. Twitter strongly believes in giving a voice to women and men across the world to put forth their views, take a stand for what they believe in and the ability to see every side of the story. In honour of International Women’s Day, Twitter is inviting people to spotlight the women who inspire them with the hashtags #SheInspiresMe or #SheLeadsIndia, which will trigger a custom #WomensDay emoji.
This is also the first time that Twitter has partnered with digital video storytelling platform@SheThePeopleTV to launch a local hashtag #SheLeadsIndia for Indian women in leadership. Twitter will also be hosting a special #BlueRoom dialogue sessions on Women in Media and Women in Technology to mark the occasion.
Twitter users across the world can join the celebration by using the emoji with the hashtags #IWD,#InternationalWomensDay#SheInspiresMe#WomensDay and a special for India, #SheLeadsIndia. Theemoji is the gender symbol for females and is a representation of feminism, the pride in being a woman and an ode to the modern woman who is expressive. The emoji will be available until 1st April 2017.
“Women around the world use Twitter for a variety of reasons - networking, exploring business opportunities and expressing their views. International Women’s Day is an opportunity to spark interest and discussion in the issues affecting women today, and we hope to draw positive attention to it with our #BlueRoom sessions and a little fun with the emoji,” said Keya Madhvani, Head - Lifestyle & Creator Partnerships, Twitter India.
Along with its partner for the event, She The People TV, Twitter is also bringing together some inspiring Indian women across sectors on 8th March to the Twitter #BlueRoom to talk about the issues women in media and technology face and how they can change the dialogue. The session will comprise of two panel discussions with leading Indian women such as Mona Gandhi, Director of Growth, Airbnb, Shreya Mishra, Founder & CEO, Flyrobe, Nidhi Bisht, Co-founder and Casting Director, TVF, Aahana Kumra, Actor amongst others.
The session will conclude with a performance by India’s funniest women comedians, Kaneez Surka &Mallika Dua in the AIB Skit, “A Woman's Besties”.

In the US, hashtags such as #StopTransMurders and#WeJustNeedToPee draw attention to trans issues and the threats of violence they regularly face, while others such as #WhyWomenDontReport provide a space for women to speak about sexual assault. In Italy,#potreiessereio and #èoradichiederescusa have drawn awareness to violence against women; in Indonesia,#janganaturtubuhku speaks out against harassment of women based on what they’re wearing.
