The Mumbai-based artist has mastered the charcoal medium with unmatched brilliance and created beautiful figurative artworks, which have an element of the real & surreal. “Black is Beautiful” is an upcoming art exhibition of charcoal figurative paintings by the charcoal master Gautam Patole. The collection has the bearings of being the highlight, centre piece holding forth in your homes. Gautam's art has been appreciated & been part of the personal collection of various Bollywood personalities. The show will be held from 11th December to 17thDecember 2017 at Jehangir Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda, Mumbai.
His first love in arts was ceramic painting; but it was the charcoal medium that he managed to tame, transporting us to the bygone era of black & white. Gautam Patole's works are mostly figurative. The spectrum is broad as it covers traditional & sensual, feminine grace in its full essence, the innocence of children, the wisdom of the monks & also the animal kingdom. Each artwork is epic and narrates a story of its own. In the artwork ‘Pursuit’ his work depicts the reality of recreation of happiness. The more you chase the more it moves away. ‘Forgivance’ is depiction of Christ’s pain in a compact form. ’Black Hole’ is use of naval to indicate that it’s the source of creation. ‘Çobweb’ depicts how a woman is entangled in various things in modern times. In ‘Red Balloons’there is a glow in the balloons but the girl is in dark. That’s how he sees the life of a balloon seller.
The works are a mystery, a puzzle to solve to delve deeper and make you think and understand the underlying emotion imbibed in them. When asked about paintings ‘Pensive mood’ and ‘In Que’, Artist Gautam Patole said, “I am fascinated by the way Rajasthani women cover their faces. There’s so much beauty hidden behind their faces. However it also speaks about the restrictions they have to face due to tradition
