~ A special International Women’s Day BlueRoom Q&A and emoji mark the celebration of women this month ~
India, 9th March 2017: This International Women’s Day, Twitter organised a special#SheLeadsIndia event for the first time in India to shed light on women who are defining gender equality in the modern times, and leveraging the power of media and technology to challenge the status quo.
The event was a celebration of this women empowerment on Twitter - whether it is the new age digital filmmaker, a veteran broadcaster, an engineer or an actor who makes use of Twitter for a variety of reasons. Twitter co-organized a #SheLeadsIndia series of panel discussions with @SheThePeopleTVinvolving women from media and technology, creating an opportunity for women to talk about how they can change the dialogue by being bold and voicing their opinions - offline as well as online.
We saw more than 7.5 million Tweets about International Women’s Day #IWD coming in from all around the world. While March 8th is the annual occasion of International Women’s Day, we also wanted to look back on the powerful conversations about women’s issues that have taken place on Twitter all year long. In 2016, there were 25% more Tweets about “feminism” or “women’s rights” (and translations of those phrases in 10 languages) than in 2015 — and so far this year, the conversation has almost doubled from the same time period last year.
