Indian GM Deepan outwits top seed GM Amonatov
Mumbai, June 9: Indian Grandmaster Deepan Chakkravarthy J., rank ninth, created a major sensation by outwitting top ranked Amonatov Farrukh of Tajikistan in the seventh round of the Rs 29 lakh prize money 10th Mumbai Mayor's Cup International Open Chess Tournament 2017, sponsored by LIC of India, co-sponsored by Ankit Gems and played at the Mount Litera School International, Bandra on Friday.
Grandmaster Neeloptal Das was another Indian to taste success by clinching a win against Bangladesh GM Rahman Ziaur. Both the Indian GM’s with six points share the lead with Ukraine GM Tukhaev Adam who scored a win over Indian IM Das Sayantan.
On the top board, GM Deepan (ELO 2480) started with Sicilian defence against Amonatov (ELO 2635) and as the game progressed he opted Najdorf variation. With both his castles on opposite sides, Deepan attacked strongly on Farrukh’s king and grabbed some crucial pieces starting with the rival’s knight on the 17th move followed by bishop on the 19th move and rook on 27th move. Facing a losing battle Amonatov eventually accepted his defeat on the 28th move.
Meanwhile, Neeloptal Das (2438) started the game with queen pawn against GM Rahman Ziaur (2526) and converted it to Sicilian kan. He managed to get extra pawn and forced GM Rahman Ziaur’s king in the corner and perfectly went for the mate. Unable to save the checkmate Rahman accepted his defeat after 43 moves.
The game between grand master Tukhaev Adam (2567) and Das Sayatan (2401) started with Sicilian defence. Sayatan later opted for Najdorf variation. In the middle game Adam manage to win a Pawn and was able to transform that advantage to go for a win after 37 moves
