Age no bar – Samurai Amma defies all odds to win the Padma Shri


Mumbai, 30th January 2017: Not all superheroes wear capes. Some are 74 years old and clad in a saree. Wondering what that means? Meet Meenakshi Amma fondly known as ‘Samurai Amma’, a 74 year old Kalaripayattu maestro who hails from a small town of Puthupadam in Kerala. Amma was recently recognized by the Government of India and she was honoured with the prestigious ‘Padma Shri’ award under the ‘Unsung Heroes’ category on Republic Day. History TV18 had showcased the mind blowing acts performed by thewonder woman on their show OMG! Kalaripayattu is a form of martial art that has lived through centuries is still, and will be, practiced in its traditional form. Once used as a combat mode in wars, today, it is a source of attention, speed, accuracy, strength, co-ordination, flexibility, memory power, concentration, peer respect, health and immunity. Meenakshi Amma has over 67 years of experience in this practice and is the perfect example that age has nothing to with achieving the impossible. She started training at a tender age of 7 and today teaches over 150 dedicated students in her own training school. Amma gives 60+ performances in a year.
HISTORY TV18 had showcased the mind blowing acts performed by the wonder woman on their show OMG! Yeh Mera India- Season 2. Her story went viral clocking a whopping 9 million views and probably caught the attention of the mandarins in New Delhi.
