- More than 8000 students from 50 schools across Mumbai participated in 19th edition of the Terry Fox Run (India) to support cancer research
Mumbai: February 22, 2017: The 19th edition of the Terry Fox Run (India) held on the 19th February, 2017 witnessed more than 8000 students from 50 schools across Mumbai taking part in the run to support cancer research. The run started from Air India building, Nariman Point and ended at Brabourne stadium (CCI). The run was flagged off by Satish Mathur, Director General of Police; Jordan Reeves, Consul General of Canada and Shaina NC, BJP Leader.
The run is dedicated to Terry Fox, a Canadian diagnosed with bone cancer in 1971 who decided to to raise money for cancer research by running across Canada. He died in 1981. Since then, the Terry Fox Run takes place in 28 countries across the world as a tribute to him. The Terry Fox Run is a non-competitive event where school students and individuals from all walks of life participate and is famously known as ‘Marathon of Hope’. The Terry Fox Foundation has been supporting Tata Memorial Hospital for past 18 years in creating awareness about cancer amongst kids and raise funds to support cancer research.
Delighted on seeing the response, Mr. Gul Kripalani, Chairman, Terry Fox Run (India) Committee said, “It is overwhelming to see people come out on a Sunday morning in a busy city like Mumbai to support such an initiative. It is this spirit of people on Mumbai and this country that has helped us make a significant contribution in increasing awareness about cancer amongst kids and raise funds for cancer research. This year, we have raised Rs. 1.25 Crore. I thank the 8000 school students and all others, especially kids suffering from cancer and their parents who joined us in this year’s run.”
The Terry Fox (India) Committee hopes to continue contributing towards cancer awareness, research and achievement of a cancer free future.
About Terry Fox
"Terry Fox was a Canadian who at a very young age was struck by a Cancer called Osteogenic Sarcoma (bone cancer) in his right leg.
To make the world aware of this kind of cancer he ran from East Coast to the West Coast of Canada and thus collected money for research. On September 1st 1980 while he was half way on his run, he succumbed to this but had realized the dream of collecting CAD 1 per Canadian and had Collected CAD 30 million when he breathed his last. Thus began a journey called Marathon of Hope. Terry died soon after, leaving this legacy behind, commonly known as the Terry Fox Run.
