Revive community radio: Make them tools of empowerment, not propaganda




There is radio that Indians are most familiar with, state-run All India Radio (AIR) with its mix of music, news, informational programming and cricket; commercial radios, with a kitschy mix of Bollywood music and RJ chatter; and then there is what is referred to as the third tier of broadcasting, community radio.

Known elsewhere in the world also as Low-Power FM, community radios typically serve a defined geographic community that is physically close to the radio station so that its listeners and potential voices can travel to the station easily and participate in its programming, both by producing programmes as well as being active listeners.

In India, with a limit of a 50-watt transmitter and a tower height of 30 metres, most stations reach a radius of 10 to 15 km around the studio. The radio team too is locally drawn, ideally representing the diversity in the community that the radio serves...
