Kulveer Kapoor feels adapting to lifestyle changes like wearing a mask or maintaining social distancing is not so difficult, the most difficult part is to let go of the kuch nahi hota attitude
Theatre artiste and senior announcer at All-India Radio (AIR), Chandigarh, Kulveer Kapoor is known for her sweet voice and, of course, for her character Shanno from popular comedy show Pop Time. She has played character roles in popular television shows likes CID, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain and Parichey. The only regret she has is that she had won a scholarship to the National School of Drama in 1984, but couldn't join the prestigious institute. "It was an opportunity of a lifetime," she says. Other than her dream to do theatre, this political science graduate from Shimla aspires to get into politics after her retirement.
How has it been to live in a lockdown?
Though we have never witnessed such a thing in our lifetime, I felt I was prepared for it. The precautionary measures for Covid 19 are something which I have been following for years, except for the mask. Work-wise, few things have changed; we are working on rotation.
A new habit or a practice encouraged by this lockdown?
During the lockdown I cared and provided for stray dogs. It started with Tiger, a stray dog, when he was hit by some vehicle and injured very badly during the lockdown. I took care of him.
A gift that has come out of this adversity?
I received the perfect gift, that too on my birthday from my husband. He cooked various dishes and baked two kinds of cakes for me apart from Ballushahi for dessert.
Any lesson from the pandemic?
Try to live according to the circumstances and enjoy every bit of it. It will soon turn into memories, which you will cherish forever.
New hobby, thanks to Covid-19?
I am focusing on gardening and watering the plants daily makes me a happy person.
If you had a choice, who would you like to be quarantined with?
My son. He is studying in the US and his exams were over by the end of March. We were planning a trip to attend his convocation on April 17, but God had some other plans.
What changes do you predict in society and your life after the lockdown?
There are countries where people cover their faces when they step out. I think we will adapt to such lifestyle changes.
What did you miss the most during the lockdown?
On May 1, every year, Cine and TV Artist Association (CINTAA) holds a get-together for the actors and due to the lockdown we couldn't meet this year. I missed reconnecting with friends. Although it's not declared but I think Minjar Mela in Chamba will also be cancelled given the situation. I love attending the Mela.
The first thing you would do after the lockdown?
As I have plans to pursue acting and writing, I would love to get my poetry and other works published after the lockdown.
What is your take-home message from this global pandemic?
Practise control. It is all in your mind that you cannot survive without eating out or splurging or that can't quit a bad habit.
A word of hope for Punjab...
Wear masks and do not step out unless it is an emergency. I know there are people who feel kuch nahi hota (Nothing will happen) but please change it to kuch bhi ho skta hai (anything can happen), just like Covid-19 happened.
