On AIR's Golden Jubilee, residents recall love for radio programmes

Saturday was a special occasion for R Subbaiyan, a 60-year-old farmer from Irugur as it was the 50th anniversary of his beloved All India Radio, Coimbatore. On the day of its golden jubilee celebrations, Subbaiyan recalled his favourite programmes and said his life was incomplete without the radio.

For K C Gopal from Arasur, AIR is a source of inspiration and confidence. "From Thirukkural to the news and entertainment programmes, I do not miss anything. I may forget to breathe but will never forget to listen to AIR," he said.

The programme head of Coimbatore's prasar bharathi, K Chitralega said AIR was able to reach 99.19% of the population through its 419 stations in 23 different languages across the country. In Coimbatore, it was launched on December 18, 1966.
