Specially-abled women dazzle with their amazing cultural performance
23rd January, 2017, Mumbai: The National Girl Child Day is observed on 24th January every year to raise awareness about the importance of girl child in our society. To promote the position of specially-abled women in our society, Om Creations Trust put up dazzling performances at their premises in Mahalakshmi, Mumbai. The occasion was graced by Shri. Ramdas Athawale, Minister of State – Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India.
The celebrations included a mix of dance and singing performances by the specially-abled women who were dressed in traditional attire. Specially-abled women also put up a collection of paintings and artifacts that showcased their inherent 'special' talent. Shri Ramdas Athawale appreciated them and also offered a helping hand in creating artifacts.
National Girl Child Day is normally associated with female infanticide and women’s empowerment through education and livelihood. However, the plight of specially-abled women, who are particularly vulnerable and marginalised, is still largely ignored by the society.
Dr. Radhike Khanna, Founder Trustee, Om Creations Trust, said, "We are honoured to host Shri. Ramdas Athawale ji on the eve of National Girl Child Day. The idea behind celebrating this day is to showcase the artistic and creative side of specially-abled women. With skill enhancement training, these women could be honourably accommodated into the mainstream where they can live a dignified life. At Om Creations, we always endeavour to enable specially-abled women find their true respectable position in society.”
The Mumbai-based NGO is a non-profit training project for holistic and educational rehabilitation of the specially-abled women.
About Om Creations Trust:
Om Creations gives developmentally challenged women training in arts, crafts and culinary skills. Established in 1991, the organisation runs three centers in Mumbai that aim to economically empower women. It gives them the space and tools they need to create more than 175 products, including painting, gift bags, wallets, scarves and food, such as bread and other baked goods, chocolates and made-to-order meals.
Om Creations staff members teach the women painting and sculpting techniques, baking, cooking, gift wrapping skills amongst others. It gives the women a stipend for the products they make, thus helping them to support themselves and their families. Various corporates and individuals are part of their elite list of clients.
