DD Free Dish Platform presently carries 94 SD TV channels: I&B min

Information and Broadcasting (I&B) minister Prakash Javadekar has said that Doordarshan's free direct to home (DTH) platform DD Free Dish is carrying 94 standard definition (SD) channels. "Doordarshan's free-to-air DTH Service DD Free Dish covers the entire country, including backward and rural areas. DD Free Dish Platform presently carries 94 SD TV channels," he informed the Lok Sabha.

He further stated that Prasar Bharati has informed that there are 635 TV transmitters (612 analog and 23 Digital) of varying capacity located in various parts of the country, including backward and rural areas of the country. Javadekar was also asked whether the government has any plan regarding transferring the set up of Doordarshan Kendras across the country that are presently not broadcasting anything to the Akashvani Kendra located therein, in the event of their closure.

In response to that, he stated that the Prasar Bharati has informed that consequent upon the rationalisation of Doordarshan Analog Terrestrial Transmitters, a decision has been taken to hand over closed television transmitter/transposer setups to co-located to All India Radio setups. "Additional staff available on closure of some DD setups pursuant to rationalisation have been posted at the vacant positions in AIR Stations as per requirement for effective broadcasting," he added.
