Gulf Oil Lubricants Powers Run For Women Safety

Collaborates with UActiv & ‘Akshara’ to promote women’s freedom and safety
Mumbai, 7th January, 2017: Gulf Oil Lubricants India Limited, one of India’s leading and fastest growing private lubricant brands, is a proud partner of ‘Urban Feet – A Run for Women’s Safety’, a marathon to promote freedom and safety of movement in public spaces for women.
The run was co-organized by UActiv, a mobile fitness app company and ‘Akshara’, an NGO specializing in women’s rights. Eminent personalities like Rahul Bose and Shabana Azmi, participated in the run, to lend their support to the cause.
Mr. Ravi Chawla, Managing Director, Gulf Oil Lubricants India flagged off the 7 km night run at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). “Women’s safety is an area where awareness levels need to be raised and seeing the events happening around us today, we still have a long way to go. We are happy to partner in this cause, as we feel that raising awareness levels will make all of Society & the authorities work together to make it safer for women in urban & rural India”, he said post the flag-off.”
Over 200 enthusiasts stepped out of their homes at 10:30 PM to participate in the seven kilometer run. A first of its kind event, ‘Urban Feet’ is the Maximum City’s only night marathon. The event was aimed at increasing awareness of women’s safety as well as raise funds to be allocated to undertake measures to ensure safety for women for the Akshara Center.
Women are an integral part of modern India, with many of them heading businesses, supporting their families and actively involved in sports. Estimates suggest that women constitute around half of India’s population. Studies have indicated that empowering women would directly impact literacy levels and income of a society by a considerable margin.

About Akshara Center
The Mumbai-based Akshara Centre grew as result of the contemporary Indian women’s movement of the 1980s, which primarily campaigned against violence against women. The organisation was established in 1995 as a resource centre, at a time when women’s rights were gaining momentum in society and there was a rising need for material from a gender perspective. Their initial goal was to educate both women and youth on the subject of women abuse so as to rid society off the same. The organisation also supports girls in completing their higher education, especially those who need to pay for the same themselves. Their vision is to establish a gender just and violence free society.
