WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AT MITHIBAI COLLEGE


March 8, 2018, Mumbai: Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal’s Mithibai College attempted in bringing about a positive change in women's education. Over a period of time, the college has indulged in conducting various initiatives taken up by the college’s various departments. In order to encourage and support women's education, they are thus empowered and inspired by them.
The Internal Complaint's Committee (erstwhile Women Development Cell) with the Department of Sociology organised an interactive slogan writing activity to celebrate International Women's Day, highlighting the importance of women in society, their influence and the issues that affect them.
The Department of Sociology in collaboration with Internal Complaint’s Committee also conducted a workshop on gender space in digital age on January 10, 2017 in Mithibai College. FemPositive - a feminist Initiative workshop was one of the interesting session that was conducted to cover the issues of gender identity, stalking, trolling, harassment and misuse of social networking sites that humiliate women and other marginalized groups of the society.
“Awareness programs on vital issues have been routinely conducted by Mithibai College and guest lectures on gender sensitisation and women empowerment programs are being held regularly. This support and motivation allows the spirit of women to grow, develop and rise in an equal society.” said Dr. Rajpal Shripat Hande, Principal of Mithibai College. Under his guidance, a low haemoglobin awareness drive had been carried out this year to raise awareness amongst young women about its significance and ways to combat it.
Mithibai College orchestrated 'Joy of Giving’ under The Institutional Social Responsibility Committee. The donations were provided to the NGOs empowering women. And in the NGO Bazaar held in Mithibai College, NGOs empowering women were invited to sell their products.
The number of female students in Mithibai College far exceeds to that of male students be in the field of Humanities and Biosciences and this clearly indicates that the college is playing a significant role in women's education. Therefore, many modifications have been made like the installation of sanitary pads vending machine in Girls’ common room. The room was renovated to provide a clean and hygienic environment for them. The college plans to install incinerators as well. The girls are encouraged to participate in sports and are also provided with a number of freeships and scholarships as directed by the Government of Maharashtra to deserving candidates.
