2nd Hockey India 5-a-side Senior National Championship 2017 starts with a flurry of goals

~ Haryana, Odisha, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh open their campaigns with wins in Women's Championship ~ 
Pune, 14 November 2017: The 2nd Hockey India 5-a-side Senior National Championship 2017 (Women) commenced today at the Shiv Chattrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, Pune.
The exciting new format of the game saw eight Women’s teams participate on the first day of the tournament where a total of 43 goals were scored in the four matches.
In the opening game of the Women’s Championship, Hockey Haryana beat Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu 18-2 in their Pool A encounter.
It took precisely one minute for the first of the goals to arrive, Rani firing Hockey Haryana into the lead which was followed by three goals in the next three minutes to make it 4-0 inside the first four minutes. However, Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu scored their only two goals of the game in 5th and 6th minutes. But Hockey Haryana never let Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu back into the match as they prevailed with a huge margin of 18-2 where goals were scored by Rani (1’, 2’, 14’, 15’, 21’, 24’, 29’, 29’), Navneet Kaur (2’, 10’, 20’, 30’), Navjot Kaur (6’, 18’), Ritu Rani (13’, 27’), Manpreet Kaur (4’) and Monika (23’) as Gayathri A (5’, 6’) scored for Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu.
In the second game in the Women’s Championship, Hockey Odisha beat Hockey Karnataka in Pool A with a margin of 3-1.
It was a competitive match between the two teams which saw the game goalless for the first 13 minutes but it was Hockey Odisha who took the lead in the 14th minute through Purnam Minz. They extended their lead in the 18th minute through Dipti Lakra but Hockey Karnataka struck back in the next minute through Komala BM to make it 2-1. The third period saw Hockey Odisha dominate to score a third goal in the 26th minute to secure a 3-1 win.
The third match of the Women’s Championship saw Hockey Punjab beat Hockey Jharkhand 5-3 to start their campaign with a victory.
The game saw goals scored evenly in all the three quarters with Hockey Punjab dominating the match as they scored five goals. Goals for Hockey Punjab were scored by Pooja Rani (5’, 8’, 17’) and Reena Rani (21’, 29’) while Kanti Pradhan (8’), Hemrom Subhasi (19’) and Sitamani Topno (30’) scored for Hockey Jharkhand.
The fourth match of the day in the Women’s Championship saw Uttar Pradesh Hockey bag an enthralling 6-5 win against Hockey Maharashtra in the most exciting game of the day.
It was Uttar Pradesh Hockey who took a 2-0 lead inside the first 7 minutes to dominate, however, Hockey Maharashtra struck back as the first period ended with Uttar Pradesh Hockey leading 3-2. In the second period, it was Hockey Maharashtra who scored the equaliser in the 20th minute leaving the crowd enthralled. However, Uttar Pradesh Hockey scored three quick goals in the third quarter to win the match 6-5. Goals for Uttar Pradesh Hockey were scored by Shreya Singh (9’, 22’, 25’, 26’), Vandana Katariya (3’) and Preeti Dubey (7’) while Aishwarya Chavan (8’), Kavita Vidyarthi (10’), Renuka Yadav (20’), Sanggai Ibemhal (28’) and Lalruatfeli H (28’) scored for Hockey Maharashtra.
