Sports event is highlight of family fun and fitness day including wellness activities, live music and food and drink
Sports star and international businessman David Beckham officiated at the inaugural Light The Night Run charity vertical race in support of Macau Special Olympics held at The Parisian Macao’s half-scale Eiffel Tower on April 28, as part of a family fun and fitness day incorporating sport, wellness and health education.
Hosted by The Parisian Macao, over 530 professional athletes and amateur sports fans signed up for the event, which included aFull Run where contestants needed to first run around both The Venetian Macao and The Parisian Macao before tackling the 750 stair climb to the Eiffel Tower’s Level 37 observation deck finish line, and a Tower Fun Run which incorporated just the tower climb.
In the Full Run Elite Group, Iao Kuan Un reached the finish line in 15 minutes 13 seconds to become male champion, with Hoi Longtaking home the female title in a time of 16 minutes 37 seconds. Full Run Competition Group male champion was Wong Kun in a time of 14 minutes 32 seconds with Wu Yang Yang female champion in 19 minutes 15 seconds. In the Tower Fun Run Group, Wong Ka Ming finished in a time of 4 minutes 55 seconds to be crowned male champion while Wong Hoi Kei put in 6 minutes 58 seconds to take the female title.
Thanks to the generous support of the participants and Sands China Ltd., the Light The Night Run event saw a donation of MOP 150,000 to Macau Special Olympics, which provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for people with intellectual disabilities. The money will cover the organisation’s bowling training programme for 2018.
Throughout the day The Parisian Macao also organised a series of fun family events for everyone to enjoy, including wellness activities, a chill out zone with a kids’ playground, and entertainment along with food and drink stations, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Eiffel Tower.
Participating at the event were Ruth Boston, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Brand Management, Sands China Ltd.; Hetzer Siu Yu Hong, CEO, National Director of Macau Special Olympics; Chan Pou Sin, Vice President of General Association of Athletics of Macau; and celebrity and charity supporter David Beckham.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Ms. Boston said, “As the first charity vertical race at our iconic Eiffel Tower, this event has not only raised funds for Macau Special Olympics sports programmes but we hope also encouraged the community to think more about health and wellness.
“We are grateful to the organisations, sponsors and participants who have made this exciting event possible and hope it can prove an inspiration for people to take up healthier lifestyles here in Macao.”
For the event The Parisian Macao partnered with the General Association of Athletics of Macau whose mission is to develop local sports and culture and raise the health of Macao citizens, while Aquarius from Coca-Cola was the official sports drink of the event with UCAN SPORTS sponsoring running vests.
All competitors were given a memento from the day, while winners received certificates of completion as well as luxury getaways at The Parisian Macao, plus dining and spa vouchers and Parisian gym memberships.
