Future generations will be called on to solve some of the most challenging problems ever created and faced by man. Our children will need to master systems-thinking to envision multiple methods for addressing complex challenges like renewable energy, world hunger, climate change, and ultimately, the design of a better world said Mr Abhimanyu Nohwar, Foun der Director, Kiba Design & Expert Advisor on Design Innovation at the National Innovation Council (2012-2014), Planning Commission, Government of India at the SecondEdition of the CII Summit on Innovation Ecosystem 2017,organized by Confederation of Indian Industry at Mumbai today.
In an automotive rich market like India, it is necessary to assess where we stand in terms of design as the market structure and product positioning is always unique for a country like India with diverse culture and hence a unique design approach is always necessary. Dr Gopichand Katragadda, Chairman, CII Task Force on Innovation Ecosystem & Chief Technology Officer, Tata Sonsset the theme for the summit and highlighted the role CII plays at the national level on Design and Innovation. He alsomentioned that “All these initiatives are creating a tremendous buzz in making India an Innovation Driven Nation in near future. A prosperous India will augur growth of all other regional players in South East Asia and in Asia as a whole.”
Underlining the role of Design, Mr Shishir Joshipura, Cochairman, CII WR Taskforce on Innovation Ecosystem & Managing Director & Country Head SKF India said that Indian companies have realized that innovation is not a one-time activity but a continuous process. In their quest to identify newer sources of creative thinking and innovative solution, they are turning to Design Community’s ability to help them. The Designer’s ability to imagine possibilities and help realize them is their key contribution.
The first panel moderated by Ms. Ashwini Deshpande, Co-founder & Director, Elephant Design highlighted the aspect of‘Design Thinking: A Cradle of Innovation’. Some of the topics discussed were how Design Thinking attempts to inspire the essential element of creativity, the ability to take an abstract idea and create something with it. It is based upon the fundamental belief that an unexecuted idea, one that is never realized, is a worthless proposition and that doing is equally as valuable as thinking.
Panelists also mentioned that at every level in every kind of organization, design thinking provides the tools one needs to become an innovative thinker and uncover creative opportunities that are present, but not visible unless ones looks for them.
The second panel moderated by Ms Geetika Kambli, Managing Partner, Future Factory emphas ised on ‘Design thinking to evolve consumer insights’. The major topics enclosedupon were Desig n Thinking is a methodology for practical, creative resolution of problems or issues that look towards an improved future result in terms of innovation, strategic capabilities, and processes and, in the broadest sense, management. Design Thinking draws upon logic, imagination, intuition, and systemic reasoning, to explore possibilities of what could be—and to create desired outcomes that benefit the end user (the customer). It was also highlighted that a designer should feel the way a consumer feels and understands the consumers’ needs to design the most accepted product.
