Mumbai, January 9: The outstanding winning performances from Sakshi Malik, the bronze medal winner at the 2016 Olympics and Frenchwoman Cynthia Vescan played inspirational roles as Mumbai Maharathi’s began with a strong 5-2 victory against Delhi Sultans in the first match of the 3rd Pro-Wrestling League, on the opening night at Siri Fort Sports Complex, New Delhi on Tuesday. Seeema, Satender Malik and Olympic gold medalist Soslan Ramonov of Russia also made winning contributions.
Sakshi Malik with a powerful display won the sixth bout against Delhi's Monia in the 62 kg women's category to give Mumbai a winning 4-2 lead. Earlier, Seema won the second bout to put Mumbai on level terms and later Mumbai’s French wrestler Cynthia easily won the fourth bout to help Mumbai once again level scores at 2-all. Later, Mumbai's Satender Malik showed great fighting spirit as he won a close fifth fight to put Mumbai 3-2 in front for the first time.
Mumbai Maharathi made a shaky start as their Ukraine wrestler Yatsenko Andrey lost the opening bout against Sandeep Tomar of Delhi Sultans in the 57kg category fight. The 26-year-old Indian wrestler Tomar won 14-9.
In the second bout which was an all-Indian affair Mumbai's 24-year old Seema picked up points late in the second round to overcome Delhi's 29-year-old Maroi Mezien 5-1 in the 50kg women category.
Delhi once regained the lead when their captain and Azerbaijan pro Albrov Aslan produced a very strong performance and outclassed Mumbai's Satyawart Kadian 15-0 in the 92 kg men category.
But Frenchwoman Cynthia easily won the fourth defeating Delhi's Egyptian wrestler Samar Amer Hamza, winning by a fall in the women's 76 kg category to level the scores at 2-all.
Later, Mumbai's Satender bounced back strongly after trailing 2-4 at the end of the first round to overcome Delhi's Hitender by a close 7-6 margin in the 125kg men category, and give Mumbai a 3-2 lead at end of the fifth bout of the night.
Mumbai extended their lead in the next bout, when Sakshi Malik with a brilliant performance clinched the match comfortably defeating Delhi's Monia in the 62 kg women's category. Sakshi asserted her dominance in the first round itself. She won 10 points from a roll and a couple of takedowns to sit pretty with a 10-1 lead at the end of the first round. In the second, the Olympian makes another takedown and rolls Monia thrice to get eight points and went on to win by technical superiority 18-2. Her win sealed the match for Mumbai Maharathi as they gained a 4-2 lead, with the final bout remaining.
Mumbai's Olympic gold medalist Soslan Ramonov of Russia defeated Delhi's Haji Aliev from Azerbaijan 3-2 in the 65 kg men's category to wrap up a 5-2 triumph for the Mumbai side.
