Starring the Emmy, Tony and Golden Globe award winner Oprah Winfrey, the film is based on the incredible true story of an African- American woman whose cells were used to create the first immortal human cell line named HeLa
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is a story that brings to light the dark history of experimentation on African Americans. All of it strung together by the direction of George C. Wolfe, famous for creating films such as The Devil Wears Prada, Garden State and Lackawanna Blues.
The movie tells the riveting story of Henrietta Lacks, who became an unwitting pioneer for medical breakthroughs when her cells were used to create the first immortal human cell line in the early 1950s. However, as was the practice then, the cells, were harvested without Henrietta’s or her family’s knowledge. For decades, Lacks’ family was kept in the dark about what happened to her cells. Since then, these HeLa cells have been used to determine human genetic structure, thus providing an insight into genetic disorders, to test vaccines for Polio saving millions and a still used today for insights into HIV, Cancer and other fatal diseases.
Talking how her story remained an unknown tale for so long, Oprah said in interview to LA Times, “Being a student of African American history, I was thrown by the idea that I'd never heard of Henrietta Lacks, and especially having lived in Baltimore, and traveled the streets she lived on and been a reporter in that town for eight years and never having heard her name — that's what was fascinating to me.”
Oprah Winfrey plays Deborah, the emotionally and physically unstable daughter of Henrietta Lacks, who suffers the torments of growing up not just motherless, but abused by family members and tortured by the knowledge that her mother was – and still is – being exploited for other peoples’ gain. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is an adaptation of the book of the same title by Rebecca Skloot that remained on bestseller lists for six years. Oprah reminds us exactly why the book stood the test of time.
