Iain Lee, a comedian who hosts a program called Late Night Alternative on talkRADIO between 10pm-1am, received a late-night call from a man identified only as Chris.
A British radio talk show host saved the life of a man by speaking to him on the phone for over 30 minutes after the latter had a drug overdose and was dying on the street.
Iain Lee, a comedian who hosts a program called Late Night Alternative on talkRADIO between 10pm-1am, received a late-night call from a man identified only as Chris. The caller, who said he suffered from PTSD, was overdosing on a mix of medications and was drifting in and out of conciousness on an unknown street in Plymouth. Slurring and seemingly drifting off at times, Chris told Lee, a radio show celebrity who has been open about his own struggles with mental health issues, that he tuned into the late-night show regularly.
Lee managed to keep Chris on the line and concious by continuously talking to him while the show's producers alerted local authorities of the dire situation. Because of Chris' condition it was hard to pinpoint his exact location and Lee kept up a stream of encouragement to prevent him from slipping into unconciousness, as well as asking Chris for any clue that might help police find him.
Afterwards, Lee took to Twitter and wrote: "Tonight we took a call from a man who had taken an overdose. He was lying in a street in Plymouth, dying. We managed to keep him online, get a description of what he looked like and was wearing, work out where he was and send an ambulance and police to him. Kept him on the phone for 30 minutes while he got harder to understand. Long periods of silence where I thought he'd died. oh! that was intense and upsetting. I really hope he makes it."......
